Despite Decline In Sales, Hyundai, Kia Beat Most Automakers With June Sales

Though sales were down for most automakers, Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America and its affiliate Kia Motors America Inc. of Irvine reported better sales than most automakers in June as sales fell at a slower pace as compared to the month of May. Hyundai, part of Seoul-based Hyundai Motor Co. reported a 24 percent drop in June sales from a year earlier. But the sales were up 3 percent from May.

Kia, which is also part of the South Korean automaker, reported a 5 percent drop in June sales from a year earlier but June was its fourth consecutive month of increased sales with a 3 percent gain from May. Last month, Hyundai Motor America’s number of vehicles sold totaled 37,943. And Kia Motor America sold 26,845 vehicles in June and its overall sales for the first six months of 2009 through June was 147,404.

June auto sales in the U.S. slumped 27 percent compared to the same month of 2008 to 880,000 vehicles. Despite, June happened to be the strongest sales month for 2009, according to analysts.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations’ sales declined 42 percent to 13,729 vehicles sold in June. According to the affiliate of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., their sales were down 35 percent to date with 100,381 vehicles sold against 153,141 vehicles sold in June last year.

Similarly, sales for Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. was down 41 percent from a year earlier with 4,362 vehicles sold in June. But the automaker also reported that its sales fell at a slower pace last month as compared to May.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. also experienced a 78 percent drop to 2,149 vehicles in June from 9,784 vehicles a year earlier.
