Coastline Community College To Build Learning Center In Newport Beach

Coastline Community College plans to build a 60,000-square-foot learning center in Newport Beach. The preliminary estimates for the project are about $24 million. The new learning center will replace the college’s learning center in Costa Mesa. With its administrative offices in Fountain Valley, Coastline has learning centers in Costa Mesa, Garden Grove and Westminster.

“It will be an aesthetic improvement in the community and bring a higher-education learning center to the city that will be a real asset,” said Kevin McElroy, vice president for administrative services at Coastline Community College.

Coastline has already paid $12.8 million for 3.5 acres at 15th Street and Monrovia Avenue in southwest Newport Beach. Currently, the plot is occupied by several offices and industrial buildings. According to the plan, the college will have three-storey building with 20 classrooms and three large multi-purpose rooms at the new plot. Coastline also has plan to move its student art gallery in Huntington Beach to the new Newport Beach site.

The center is expected to open in 2012. “We’re still in the planning stages, but if everything goes well, we’re trying to shoot for a 2012 opening,” said Isaiah Aguirre, a public information officer for Coastline Community College.
The funding for the project will come from Measure C, a $370 million bond initiative for the Coastline  Community College district that voters passed in 2002. Coastline roped in on Irvine architectural firm LPA to design the Newport Beach center.
